Eslovênia

As terras eslovenas faziam parte do Sacro Império Romano e da Áustria, até 1918, quando os eslovenos juntaram-se aos sérvios e croatas na formação de um novo Estado multinacional, rebatizado de Yugoslávia, em 1929.

Após a Segunda Guerra Mundial, a Eslovênia tornou uma república da Yugoslávia renovada, que apesar de comunista, distanciou-se do domínio de Moscou.

Insatisfeitos com o poder de maioria sérvia, os eslovenos conseguiram sua independência em 1991, após uma guerra de 10 dias. Laços históricos com a Europa Ocidental, uma economia forte e uma democracia estável ajudaram na transformação da Eslovênia em um Estado moderno. Eslovênia aderiu à União Europeia em 2004.

Terrain: a short coastal strip on the Adriatic, an alpine mountain region adjacent to Italy and Austria, mixed mountains and valleys with numerous rivers to the east.

Highest point: Triglav 2,864 m.

Climate: Mediterranean climate on the coast, continental climate with mild to hot summers and cold winters in the plateaus and valleys to the east.
