Após um breve período de independência entre as duas guerras mundiais, a Letônia foi anexada pela União Soviética, em 1940. A independência foi reconquistada em 1991, após a dissolução da União Soviética.

A Letônia aderiu à OTAN e à União Europeia em 2004.

Administrative divisions: 26 regions (496 parishes) and 7 cities of national significance (Riga, Daugavpils, Liepaja, Jelgava, Jurmala, Ventspils, Rezekne).

Terrain: low plain. Most of the country is composed of fertile, low-lying plains, with some hills in the east

Total area: 64,589 km².

Coastline: 531 km.

Highest point: Gaizinkalns 312 m.

Climate: maritime; wet, moderate winters.

Ports and harbors: Liepaja, Riga, Ventspils.
