O Principado de Liechtenstein foi estabelecido dentro do Sacro Império Romano em 1719, tornou-se um Estado soberano em 1806. Até o final da Primeira Guerra Mundial, ele estava estreitamente ligado à Áustria, mas a devastação econômica causada pelo conflito forçou Liechtenstein ao entrar em uma união aduaneira e monetária com a Suíça. Desde a Segunda Guerra Mundial (na qual Liechtenstein permaneceu neutro), impostos baixos do país têm estimulado o crescimento econômico excepcional.

Religions: Roman Catholic (official) 75.9%, Protestant Reformed 6.5%, Muslim 5.4%, Lutheran 1.3%, other 2.9%, none 5.4%, unspecified 2.6% (2010 est.).

Ethnic groups: Liechtensteiner 66.3%, other 33.7% (2013 est.).

Language: German 94.5% (official) (Alemannic is the main dialect), Italian 1.1%, other 4.3% (2010 est.).

Geografia

Country name: Principality of Liechtenstein (local: Fuerstentum Liechtenstein).

Capital: Vaduz.

Government type: hereditary constitutional monarchy on a democratic and parliamentary basis.

Independence: 23 January 1719 Imperial Principality of Liechtenstein established; 12 July 1806 established independence from the Holy Roman Empire.

Administrative divisions: 11 communes (Gemeinden, singular - Gemeinde); Balzers, Eschen, Gamprin, Mauren, Planken, Ruggell, Schaan, Schellenberg, Triesen, Triesenberg, Vaduz.

Terrain: mostly mountainous (Alps) with Rhine Valley in western third .

Total area: 160 km².

Highest point: Grauspitz 2,599 m (lowest point: Ruggeller Riet 430 m).

Climate: continental; cold, cloudy winters with frequent snow or rain; cool to moderately warm, cloudy, humid summers.
